Job DescriptionAbout this OpportunityAs manager of custodial services at Friday Harbor Laboratories (FHL) on San Juan Island, you will manage and supervise cleaning and custodial work performed in all buildings on campus (housing units, marine science laboratories, administrative offices, and common use spaces), being ultimately responsible for ensuring that custodial standards are met. Also performs cleaning and custodial work for a substantial portion of the time.Custodian Supervisor 1 (NE S WFSE Cust Supv)Key ResponsibilitiesSchedule and assign custodial work – 20%Inspect buildings to determine cleaning needs and job assignments;Set scheduled weekly hours for salaried and intermittent hours for non-salaried custodial employees;Determine seasonal and weekly staffing needs for cleaning buildings;Identify team workloads and availability, and assign work accordingly; Monitor ever-changing visitor reservations, create weekly cleaning schedules to ensure spaces are prepared for visitor arrivals, and adjust to last-minute reservation changes; andPlan and oversee performance of seasonal and special cleaning projects as needed.Recruit, hire, oversee, train, support, and manage performance of approximately 5 custodial staff – 20%With delegated authority and in coordination with HR and administrative staff, review job candidates, conduct interviews, and recommend selection of prospective hires into custodial positions; Review, write and maintain current custodial procedures, and conduct staff training in them;Review and approve bimonthly time and absence entries of direct reports; andConduct annual performance evaluations, maintain a record of job performance, and identify and recommend improvement and disciplinary actions as needed for custodial employees.Monitor, report on, and take actions as needed on inventory and conditions - 10%Evaluate inventory and maintain stocks of cleaning supplies and common consumables, e.g., paper towels, toilet paper, soap;Track spending within a defined budget and recommend purchasing needs to fiscal staff for budgeting; Monitor cleaning equipment to ensure it is maintained in proper working order;Monitor and report on condition of furniture, equipment, and supplies, e.g., large and small kitchen appliances, dishes, utensils, mattresses and bedding, linens and towels;Identify and report on building security and maintenance issues, and potential safety hazards, and correct minor issues; andPrepare reports on building inventories.Oversee safety and security related to custodial work – 5%Assign building keys to custodial staff and maintain key security;Stay current on applicable safety resources and information;Conduct safety meetings and trainings for custodial staff;Communicate and enforce safety rules and regulations;Investigate accidents and promptly fill out accident reports; andMaintain compliance with applicable policies and procedures, and nform supervisor of any potential gaps in applicable policies or procedures.Perform a variety of basic custodial duties – 40%Clean interior spaces throughout campus including self-contained cottages and apartments with kitchens and bathrooms; dormitory rooms; shared washrooms, bathrooms, and other common spaces; classrooms; laboratory buildings; and administrative offices;Wash interior and easily accessible exterior windows;Empty trash and recycling cans in campus collection stations;Check and restock supplies, e.g., paper towels, toilet paper, soap; andMove furniture and equipment on an incidental basis.Other duties as required and assigned – 5%Attend meetings and trainings as required; andPerform related duties as required.Required QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below.
