DepartmentBSD ACC - Clinical StaffAbout the DepartmentThe Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care is a clinical academic department at the University of Chicago.The mission of the Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care is to: Provide outstanding compassionate patient care; educate each other and the next generation of physicians and scientists; be leaders in scholarship, discovery and innovation; and to bring out the best in all with whom we work.Job SummaryThe Advanced Practice Nurse will provide comprehensive care to patients for the Pain and Anesthesia Perioperative Medicine Clinics (APMC) within the Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care at the University of Chicago.This position may float to offsite locations (Orland Park, River East, Crown Point, Ind). Candidates must have a current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.ResponsibilitiesEvaluate and manage surgical and procedural patients prior to their scheduled intervention. Provide direct primary health care to patients, in collaboration with supervising physician(s) and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems. Assist Anesthesiologists through organized instruction and supervised practice. Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols. Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the date in the patient's record; screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission, making referrals to other disciplines as indicated.Write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.Obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care, and assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients. Perform and document physical examinations according to government guidelines and personalize therapies.Order appropriate laboratory tests according to clinical diagnosis, clinical pathways, and protocols.Arrange and order appropriate diagnostic studies for patients under the direction of the attending physician.Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.Select appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.May participate in health education in the community.May participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician.May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.Practice specific and invasive procedure privileges are detailed in each APNs Delineation of Privileges.Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.Performs other related work as needed.Minimum QualificationsEducation:Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.Work Experience:Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.Certifications:Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required.
