Job Title:HVAC AssistantFull- or Part-Time:Full timeExempt or Non-Exempt:NoHourly Rate:25.90 USD HourlyDepartment:Campus Facilities-Maintenance (PM) (Mark EngelhartJob Description:Workdays: Saturday - WednesdayShift: 9:00am-5:30pmHourly wage: $25.90-30.80 per hour based on the Support Staff Association ContractJOB SUMMARY: To maintain, repair, install, and perform preventative maintenance on heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning units and systems.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair boilers and refrigeration systems.Maintain, install, and repair heating and ventilating units; may include heating and cooling coils, preheaters, dampers, and duct work.Install and repair HVAC control systems, pneumatic and electric.Repair and install broad-based cooling systems.Inspect, install, and repair piping fixtures and equipment; may include pumps, valves, heaters, piping and fittings.Lubricate fans, motors, and pumps, and change filters and belts.Cut, thread, and assemble pipe using saw, pipe cutter, and threader.Fabricate and assemble tubing using saw, benders, and torch.Test components using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic test equipment.Insulate lines, components, and storage tanks.Clean HVAC systems.Maintain logs and records of temperatures, running times, and maintenance on HVAC systems.Test and treat cooling towers and boilers to maintain chemical treatment levels.  RELATED DUTIES:Conduct scheduled rounds inspections and emergency service calls on campus.Assist other maintenance personnel as required.Assist in the maintenance of campus facilities; may include all duties listed on the Maintenance I Job Description.Other duties as assigned.  SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Assignments and administrative supervision are received from the Assistant Vice President and/or his designee(s).SUPERVISION EXERCISED:May be responsible for student employees assigned to them.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High School diploma or equivalent, with strong math skills.Valid Michigan Driver License.Four years job-related experience or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.Pass electrical and mechanical testing as determined by the University.Pass selected courses in refrigeration, heating and air conditioning or equivalent accredited courses.Four years of technical or experience can be evaluated to replace part or all of the selected courses.Pass electrical & mechanical testing set up by the university.State of Michigan Boiler Operator License preferred.  Certification of compliance with the Refrigerant Recycling Rule under requirements of Section 608, of the Clean Air Act, 1990 as amended is required.Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, specifications, and instructional manuals.Ability to effectively communicate with others and maintain good working relations with supervisors, co-workers, and the University community.Ability to work alone or as member of a team, perform job duties within scheduled time limits, and adapt to rounds and emergency scheduling.Ability to compile, maintain, and process required logs and records.Ability to follow and apply both routine and specific HVAC safety procedures.Ability to exercise appropriate judgment, based on specific situation.Ability to begin and follow through with the task(s) or plan identified in the job description, and to take the first step in performance of those duties and responsibilities.Reporting of facilities or grounds maintenance needs which are observed.Ability to physically lift, carry, push, and/or pull HVAC tools, equipment, supplies, and related materials such as pumps, fans, motors, etc.Ability to stand, walk, climb, maintain one's balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle while performing job duties.Ability to pass job-related physical examination, skill test, and/or State/Federal mandated training, licensing, certification requirements, required safety training within a reasonable period of time.Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.WORKING CONDITIONS:Subject to indoor and outdoor environmental changes.Subject to extreme temperatures.Subject to potential hazards such as electrical currents, moving parts, high heat, high places, dust, chemicals and fumes. The above reflects the general details considered necessary to describe the essential functions of the job, and shall not be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or requirements that may be inherent in the job.  It is not intended to limit or in any way modify the right of any supervisor to assign, direct, and control the work of employees under his/her supervision.  The use of a particular expression or illustration describing duties shall not be held to exclude other duties not mentioned that are of similar kind or level of difficulty.About SVSU:Saginaw Valley State University is a comprehensive university with more than 100 programs of study for its roughly 7,000 students.
