Previous applicants will remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.The North Carolina Department of Revenue is looking for a Tax Auditor in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. This is a full-time, permanent position with a hybrid remote work schedule and State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement. This position will be located in Hickory, Asheville, or Greensboro. The minimum starting salary is $54,137.The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, as well as some motor vehicle laws. The Motor Fuels Tax Auditor examines motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with the Revenue laws of North Carolina, as well as conducts audits for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) purposes.It is the responsibility of this position to perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, and service stations registered with the Excise Tax Division to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules. Audits performed will involve the interpretation and application of tax laws to ensure compliance with revenue laws and motor vehicle laws by employing professional auditing and accounting principles and practices in the examination of the taxpayers' records and tax reports. The Tax Auditor I maintains an audit plan, which includes simultaneously selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review. Audits may be conducted at the taxpayer's place of business; therefore, some overnight and out-of-state travel may be required.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management PreferencesA vehicle and a valid driver's license are required due to the travel requirements for this position. Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income TaxRecruitment Range: $54,137 - $87,654Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.
