Join us along with our more than 3,000 employees and 12,000 National Guard members in providing exceptional public safety services to the citizens of North Carolina.Description of WorkAbout the Gauge Maintenance Technician Position:The Gauge Maintenance Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, inspection, and repair of stream gauge stations and associated telemetry equipment across an assigned network of field sites. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the continuous collection of accurate hydrologic data used for the Flood Inundation Mapping and Alert Network (FIMAN).Duties and responsibilities include:• Conduct routine site visits to inspect, calibrate, and service stream gauge instrumentation • Install, replace, and repair data loggers, solar panels, batteries, antennas, and cellular/satellite/VHF communication equipment• Identify and troubleshoot data transmission failures, sensor malfunctions, and stale or erroneous data readings• Document site visits, equipment changes, and maintenance actions in the station records database• Coordinate with landowners, local governments, and partner agencies regarding site access and maintenance activities• Communicate equipment status and emerging data quality issues to supervisors and data management staff• Support emergency response operations during flood events, including high water mark collection• Assist survey crew as necessary and collect benchmarksAbout Hazard Mitigation:The primary mission of the Hazard Mitigation Section (HM) is to deliver and support mitigation activities across the State of North Carolina as guided and authorized under NC General Statute 166A, the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, and other guiding pieces of legislation. The section completes its mission by developing mitigation action plans at the State and local level, managing, and implementing grants provided by FEMA for protection of NC residents and their property; acquiring, managing, and disseminating geospatial data and flood water information; and managing the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for the State.About NCEM:The primary purpose of North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) is to enhance North Carolina's resiliency through active collaboration, communication, and coordination of efficient and effective preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of all natural and man-made hazards and threats. It is part of the NC Department of Public Safety (NCDPS).Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management PreferencesRecruitment Range:$39,671.00 - $69,426.00Salary Range: $41,206.00 - $72,113.00*This posting will close at 11:59pm on June 30, 2026*This is a full time TIME-LIMITED position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, retirement, and health insurance for a limited duration of time.
