You must be a permanent employee (temporary and contract employees are excluded) with the Oregon Department of Corrections or Oregon Corrections Enterprise to be considered for this position. This list maybe used to fill future vacancies.Position OverviewMajor duties include, but are not limited to:Assigning, monitoring, evaluating, and assessing training needs of subordinate staff; participating in screening process of new hires; conducting background checks of applicants and making recommendations on hiring; conducting orientation of new hires;Resolving personnel issues and complaints; responding to grievances; participating in disciplinary investigations; effectively recommending appropriate actions; counseling employees in work-related activities such as professional growth, and career development;Reviewing and investigating reports of security, safety and sanitation infractions; reviewing and endorsing all misconduct and unusual incident reports prepared by subordinates; ensuring corrective action is taken; authorizing and terminating visits; making independent decision to remove inmate to special housing unit or to return inmate to parent institution because of major infraction or the need for protection;Supervising and inspecting dining room, infirmary and clinic, housing units, segregation units; authorizing changes in institution routing when dictated by operational necessity; andserving as commander in emergency situations until relieved by superiors; initiating action, deploying staff, and notifying designated staff in emergencies such as an inmate disturbance, escape, or criminal activity; securing and maintaining chain of evidence in the event of criminal activityTo QualifyTo apply you must be a current employee with the Oregon Department of Corrections or Oregon Corrections Enterprises; this does not include temporary employees.Three (3) years of experience in a correctional-security setting where primary duties were the care and custody of AICs. One (1) year of the experience must have been at the level of a Sergeant in a correctional system. ANDBe able to obtain, within one year, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency.Education will not be accepted as a substitute for the required experience.Special QualificationsBe eligible to obtain a valid Oregon Department of Public of Safety and Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate if you are not currently certified by DPSST.Desired AttributesPossess a valid Oregon Department of Public of Safety and Standards and Training (DPSST) Advanced Correctional Certificate.
