JOB TITLE Departmental Laboratory Technician JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering at Florida Polytechnic University is seeking applicants for a Departmental Laboratory Technician. This position is available to be filled immediately. The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering at Florida Polytechnic University will offer a new Biomedical Sciences degree starting in the fall of 2026. The Department supports these degrees through multiple teaching and research laboratories in both biology and chemistry. This hiring position is part of the university's strategic expansion to support this new degree program. JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities:A successful candidate will support this program by:conducting safety support for employees and students,preparing and setting up weekly laboratory experiments,facilitating in-class demonstrations (as necessary),maintaining laboratory inventories for chemistry and biology, including documenting hazardous waste use and waste disposal, andSupporting outreach activities in both biology and chemistry.Successful candidates should possess: excellent communication skills,the ability to train faculty and students in the use of personal protective equipment and other safety best practices,the ability to conduct thorough safety audits, andA familiarity with chemical inventory management systems.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS B.S. in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or a closely related field, where the degree must be complete before a candidate’s starting date.Experience in a laboratory environment.In lieu of a degree, any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience in a scientific laboratory setting.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES KSAs:Excellent computer and laboratory skillsKnowledge of chemical hygiene plans, biohazard safety, and waste disposalExperience working in a teaching laboratory settingProficiency with a variety of instrumentationExperience with electronics laboratory equipmentKnowledge of current OSHA and EPA regulationsThis position requires a background check, which may include a level II screening as required by the Florida Statute §435.04This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulationsTARGET HIRING SALARY: $23.22 hr - $24.52 (48,300 - 51,000), commensurate with experience.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThe position may require carrying electronic equipment and moving lab equipment to organize or set up new labs.Must lift over 50 lbsLOCATION/WORK MODEL: Full-time/On-siteNote: Employment-based visa sponsorship will NOT be considered for this position.REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:Must possess a valid driver’s license.This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.WORKING CONDITIONSThis is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position.
