Edwards College of Dental Medicine (JBECDM) seeks to hire a part-time general dentist who will serve as an attending faculty in our Special Needs Clinic. The position is a part-time faculty appointment in the Pamela Kaminski clinic for Adults with Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) at the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine.  The position will have an appointment in the Division of Population Oral Health, Department of Biomedical and Community Health Sciences.The Pamela Kaminski Clinic for Adults with Special Health Care Needs serves individuals with special needs throughout the state of South Carolina. The goals of the program are to:Provide care for adults with special dental and health care needs.Provide patients with SHCN a dental home for continued dental care, either through continued treatment at our facility or through a concierge transition to a provider in the community.Train dental students and residents in the treatment of patients with SHCN.Key responsibilities:Specialized procedures: Diagnose and treat various dental conditions including carries, periodontal disease, dental injuries, as well as other oral health issues related to patients with a variety of disabilities.Dental rehabilitation: Perform dental procedures in an operating room setting for adolescents and adults unable to receive care in an office due to medical complexity, or disability.Collaborate with medical and dental specialists: Provide consultations with medical specialties regarding the care of adolescents and adults with special health care needs. Patient and family education: Guide families on oral hygiene, nutrition, preventative measures, and treatment options.Patient record management: Maintain accurate and thorough patient records.Evidence-based practice: Keep abreast of advancements in special needs dentistry through continuing education and professional development.Managing dental anxiety: Utilize specialized techniques and equipment to create a supportive and comforting environment for patients with SHCN during visits, particularly those experiencing anxiety or fear. Skills and qualifications:DDS or DMD degree: Possessing a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.Hospital Credentials: Must meet credentialing requirements for operating room privileges.State Licensure: Eligibility for licensure or faculty dental license in South Carolina.Experience: Demonstrated experience working with patients with special healthcare needs and managing their dental and behavioral needs.Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for building trust and rapport with patients and their families.Patience and Empathy: Working with patients with disabilities requires patience, understanding, and empathy to address their concerns and anxieties.Teamwork: The ability to collaborate effectively with other dental professionals and medical specialists. Qualified applicants should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and three professional references with their application.The academic rank and salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and commensurate with their experience level.Additional Job DescriptionPhysical Requirements: (Note: The following descriptions are applicable to this section: Continuous - 6-8 hours per shift; Frequent - 2-6 hours per shift; Infrequent - 0-2 hours per shift) Ability to perform job functions in an upright position.
