We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard—from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.We are seeking a Technical Lead to lead the design, installation, and launch of Automated Defect Detection and Automated Finesse systems across GM paint shops.In this role, you will own the full project lifecycle, from early process studies and Statement of Requirements (SOR) development through G-Risk, mod builds, installation, commissioning, and launch. Early in the role, you will spend significant time at GM plants and supplier locations learning the systems and supporting launches. Over time, the role transitions to a more balanced mix of office-based work and plant support.You will also help troubleshoot and improve existing systems, partnering closely with plant teams, suppliers, resident engineers, and execution teams to deliver reliable, high-performing solutions that improve paint quality and repair efficiency.What You’ll DoLead Automated Defect Detection and Automated Finesse projects for new paint shops, from early concept and process studies through installation, commissioning, and launchDefine system requirements, develop SORs, and support sourcing and supplier selectionPartner with plant teams and suppliers to ensure systems achieve quality, safety, and performance targetsSupport resident engineers and execution teams with implementation of Automated Finesse and Automated Defect Detection systems in existing paint shopsTroubleshoot technical issues on existing installations and work with plant teams to identify root causes and prevent repeat failuresLead continuous improvement efforts to increase uptime, quality, and repair efficiencyCollect and analyze plant and trial data to identify gaps, trends, and improvement opportunitiesCoordinate with suppliers on new technologies, testing, and validation activitiesTravel to plants and supplier sites to support installations, trials, launch activities, and problem-solvingIdentify opportunities to expand Automated Finesse capabilities and improve defect detection and repair performanceRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical fieldStrong understanding of manufacturing systems, preferably in paint operations, automation, or bothExperience leading technical projects from concept through launchDemonstrated ability to take ownership and work independently with limited directionStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a manufacturing or plant environmentComfortable working hands-on with equipment, robots, and production systemsStrong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with plant teams, suppliers, and cross-functional partnersAbility to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environmentWillingness to travel to plants and supplier sites as needed; travel is expected to be higher during the first year while learning the systems, then approximately 25% thereafterPreferred QualificationsExperience with automated defect detection, robotic repair, or similar advanced paint technologiesExperience with AI-based systems used to train and identify defectsBackground working with vision systems, robotics, or automation in a manufacturing environmentExperience supporting or developing new technology through trials, testing, and validationFamiliarity with paint shop processes, defect detection, and paint surface quality GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
