This role requires deep expertise in current vision systems, awareness of emerging imaging trends including AI, and hands-on ability to solve complex vision system challenges. The position also plays a key role in leading and maintaining global machine vision standards across manufacturing.What You’ll DoSupport vision applications across manufacturing centers and execution teamsReview manufacturing system requirements and design robust vision applicationsCreate and document scalable vision applications for error proofing, robot guidance, and part qualityPartner with manufacturing engineering teams and regional execution teams to gather requirements and improve solutionsInterface with vision equipment and integration suppliersDevelop vision system hardware and software designs, including devices, power distribution, I/O networks, software, and cost estimating toolsEnsure designs comply with GCCH, GCCS, and Global Robot StandardsSupervise contractor detailed designs when neededSpecify vision system components, functional requirements, and integration methodsEvaluate and validate new vision technologies for manufacturing useProvide on-site and remote support for startup, troubleshooting, reprogramming, diagnostics, and plant vision issuesDevelop training and documentation for global deployment of standard vision systemsEducate regional execution teams on standard vision applicationsPartner with execution teams and vision SMEs to strengthen GM’s competitive advantage in vision and imaging systemsInvestigate industry trends in vision AI and emerging technologiesEnsure cyber security requirements are included in vision system componentsDevelop vision applications to support virtual manufacturingSupport R&D and IT teams in developing custom GM applicationsWork with suppliers to identify cost reduction opportunitiesCoordinate and support manufacturing lab initiatives, proof of concepts, and pilot deployments in labs and plant facilitiesProvide status updates to managementMentor students and new hiresDrive systemic issues, lessons learned, and closure actions to completionOccasional travel is required within North America and globally to OEM and plant sitesRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related fieldExtensive technical knowledge in machine visionStrong technical knowledge of robotics, AI, and automation processingExtensive experience with Zebra (Matrox), Keyence, Photoneo, or related vision technologiesExperience developing and integrating vision applicationsAbility to troubleshoot complex vision-related issuesStrong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to manage multiple complex assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountabilityAbility to provide technical direction, mentoring, and project leadershipSelf-motivated with the ability to multitask and drive continuous improvementDemonstrated initiative and strong individual technical contributionsProven project management skills and ability to teach othersPreferred QualificationsAIA Certified Vision Professional (Basic or Advanced)Experience with additional vision technologies and suppliers2–3 years of plant assignment experience10+ years of experience in the design, build, and startup of manufacturing systemsKnowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learningExperience with manufacturing and industrial automation including material-handling systems, AMRs, cobots, and virtual commissioningUnderstanding of plant floor operations and product design manufacturabilityGlobal project experience across regionsProgramming knowledge in C++ and PythonExperience with ROS/ROS2Familiarity with NVIDIA Isaac, Omniverse, or similar 3D/manufacturing simulation environmentsFamiliarity with Teamcenter, Siemens Technomatix Process Simulate, or similar toolsOngoing development of technical expertiseRecognition for outstanding contributionsWhy Join GMThis is an opportunity to help shape the future of manufacturing automation at General Motors by advancing global vision standards, supporting plant execution, and developing next-generation machine vision solutions.
